You can easily create watercolor backgrounds for your lettering using simple supplies that you probably already have at home. These vibrant backgrounds are fun to experiment with different techniques and color combinations, and you never know how they will turn out. Follow the steps below:

Watercolor Background Tools:


  • Clip board
  • Painter’s tape
  • Heat tool
  • Plastic wrap
  • Paper towel


  1. Secure paper to clipboard using painter’s tape
  2. Select 3-4 marker colors
  3. On the plastic bag, scribble the markers to add color
  4. Add water to the surface using spray bottle
  5. Flip plastic over and press design onto paper
  6. Manipulate colors using your fingers (not too much!)
  7. Optional: use plastic wrap to add texture
  8. Optional: dry design with heat tool
  9. Optional: add a second layer of color
