    Crayola Calligraphy

Did you know that you can do calligraphy with a Crayola marker?? Since many homes have a Crayola marker laying around, this type of calligraphy can come at no additional cost (or low cost).

This is a fun beginner style to experiment with as you develop your lettering skills.

We don't have a specific guide on Crayola hand lettering, but read our beginner's guide to learn about pressure control necessary for creating those beautiful contrasting lines.

Prompt #2: School's out, written in a bounced style with a Crayola marker

    Brush Pens And Blending

Thanks to their versatility, ease and access, brush pens are a favorite art tool for newbies and designers alike. Newbies can enjoy the challenge of leaving their comfort zone, and experienced hand lettering enthusiasts will never be done playing around with these amazing pens.

Did you know that you can even blend with brush pens? For a little challenge, consider applying this technique to some of your June prompts!

Here are tutorials to help you learn brush lettering and blending:

Grateful for sunshine written in calligraphy

Prompt #15: Grateful for sunshine, written in a Copperplate style with flourishes

    Advanced Composition On iPad

Sometimes a lettering challenge is meant to be challenging - like this style suggestion. We suggest taking one of your digital lettering pieces and taking the composition to the next level.

By zooming in on specific design details (like the backdrop and letter texture), you can easily create more depth and maturity in a simple composition like the example below.

You don't need to spend hours on every practice prompt, but try incorporating little details from our blog post into your digital lettering practice:

    • Read here: How to make digital calligraphy look more advanced

Prompt #24: Starry night, written in iPad calligraphy with digital effects

    June Project Ideas

Nature puts on a show for us in June! Let's grab inspiration from what's happening outside:

    • Shape: All around us, from expanding plants to growing animals, shapes are maturing

    • Movement: Think flickering bonfires and excited ocean waves

    • Repetition: Take stock of nature's use of repetition, from the stars in the night sky to fields full of flowers to dots on lady bugs

Learn more about these principles of design in our blog post: Calligraphy Composition And Layout.

Fresh cut flowers written in calligraphy

Prompt #20: Fresh cut flowers written in a modern style

Lettering practice is allowed to be just that - practice. You don't have to create something that'll last a lifetime or be shown to anyone else. Of course, if you do feel like putting your lettering to practical use, we have some ideas for you.

    1. Snail mail. Consider turning your practice words and phrases into a letter to let someone know you're thinking of them!

    2. Plant pressing. Press leaves or flowers and write the name of the plant and the date in calligraphy to preserve the memory

    3. Garden signage. Write cute garden signs that can be given away as gifts or even sold at a yard sale ( these make great Cricut projects).

Prompt #7: Golden hour written in Procreate with flourishes
